Callum

Scotty sips at the hot coffee inside of a paper cup, one brow perched as he watches me. He glances around the tiny coffee shop that’s located too far from the penthouse to be convenient. “What are we doing here, Haley?”

Damn, he wastes no fucking time on getting straight to the point. I pick at the cardboard wrapped around my cup to prevent any burns when handling. I know I’m doing the right thing here. If murder can ever actually be a right thing. The guilt of hiding this from my man is eating at me.

“I have something to share, and Callum can’t know about it.”

Scotty’s cheeks turn red. “Listen. You’re a beautiful woman, Doc—”

“—Gross,” I cut him in, shaking my head frantically. “Ehw. I’m not here to hit on you! I’m here to tell you something.”

His face softens into one of relief. “Jesus. Don’t scare me like that.”

I reach over the table, slapping his arm. “Stop being so annoying.”

“You’re the one who brought me here and hasn’t told me why.”

Clearing my throat, I glance around the coffee shop to be sure there are no familiar faces. No one that can overhear what I’m about to say and report back to the King of the Southies. Once I’m satisfied that I’m in the clear, I turn back to Scotty. Making eye contact, I say in a low voice, “Camille.” I suck in a breath, then exhale. “She has to die. And Cal can’t know I’m behind it.”

Scotty chooses this exact moment to swallow coffee. Of course my words shocked him, so hot liquid spurts out of his nostrils. I reach for the pile of napkins between us and start wiping up the mess he’s made. Heads are turning to stare at us, and I cringe. Attention is the exact opposite of what I wanted.

“Way to go. Now the entire shop is staring at us,” I hiss through my teeth while we both work to clean up the mess.

Scotty offers an awkward smile at a passerby and nods his head. “Sorry,” he says through bated breath. “But you can’t spring something so insane on me, Doc.”

“Is it so insane, Scotty?” I ask. I draw a brow, giving him a hardened look. “I mean, Callum can’t do it without upsetting Paddy. But you and me? We can.”

“No. We can’t.” Scotty speaks slow and intentional. Almost as if he thinks I’m an idiot.

I’m not an idiot. I’ve thought this plan through. It’s the only way to do it without having fingers pointed back to Callum. It’s the only way to make sure we get away with it. Normally, Callum wouldn’t worry himself about getting away with murder. He has people who cover it up for him.

This is different, though. Paddy has made him promise. Yeah, technically that should extend to me. I just don’t give a shit. Not when the bitch is actively planning to take the baby from us. I’ll sacrifice what I have to in order to stop that.

I’ll even put my relationship with Callum on the line.
